Love the version with Branford Marsalis from maybe Sept 90 or 91

Good call. The one with Branford brings a whole new element to the song and makes a tremendous impact. It really sails.

It is indeed the Without a Net version....fantastic.

Another really jazzy entry is on the Dix Pix show (forget the volume #) from Boston Garden 1991..it's a 23 minute version featuring some incredible keyboards from Bruce Hornsby.

If you like the Branford version, check this one out as well.

I think I may that DP. Theres a View from the Vault DVD with Hornsby around that same period, the may be a decent version there as well. I'll check when I get home.

Most of my faves are already mentioned so I'll throw out these:

9/11/74 With Ned Lagin adding alot on keys this one's got some beautifully unique Garcia licks throughout, especially from 3 minutes in until around the 5 1/2 minute mark when the 1st verse finally starts. :)

9/17/82. Solid. Flows nicely out of a great Estimated. Bright vocals (...no particular waaaay but our own!) and leads from Jerry and strong melodic keys from Brent. Nice Spanish Jam>Other One>GDTRFB also. Awesome High Time and Touch in 1st set. My first bootleg...

One of my favorites is 9-12-81 at the Greek. It's a great long Eyes which segues into a hot Jerry/Billy Jam, awesome stuff.

YES! 9/12/81 is an outstanding Eyes, Jim Wise did a grand job in taping that, one of the better Aud I've heard.
Not sure on the "Without a net" Eyes, i understand it had lot's of studio work done on it(vocals added), I'll have to hear an Aud or SB of it, Bransford's addition to the Dead shines in the 12/31/90 Eyes, my fav with him playing

For me, the 2/9/73 show from Madison, WI has one of the best "Eyes" ever. If you want to pony up and buy Dick's Picks 19 from Oklahoma City, "Eyes" is played as the encore. The only time, I believe, it was played as an encore. The entire show just smokes. You get the debut of the "Mind Left Body Jam" and a monsterous "Dark Star". One of the best of the "Wall Of Sound" shows.

A lot of my favorties have already been covered but a couple that weren't are 10-31-83 that moves along at a nice clip and 07-14-84 which is just ridiculously fast. Probably not the stellar performance of all time but its still a fun version. But, the best version I've found in a long time is not the Dead but the latest lineup of Phil Lesh and Friends. check out the soundboard from 12-04-05 with John Scofield. That's one of the greatest Eyes I've heard in while, Phil's vocals notwithstanding.

Oh yeah, 2/26/77 is one of my faves! I'll check out the Eyes in a bit, what I remember most from that show (it was my first Dead tape) is the Playin>wheel>playin and Terrapin. Thanks for the recommendation.

That's a hip transition. also, Jerry's solo in Help on the Way that keeps cycling back around several times before finally peaking out and dropping into the last verse before Slipknot. Fantastic. Still my all time favorite Phil show. The recording I have has the bass just cranked! Good stuff.

I don't see 7-14-90 (Foxboro) mentioned.. if so, sorry for the redundancy... anyways, the best I ever heard.. and saw. The recordings do it justice too.

2.22.74 at Winterland was a monster. There used to be a whole series of modulated changes the band played at the end and they hit them all that night. Later, that portion was dropped but it was done that way on that monster Friday night show.

I think Eyes of the World is one of their best compositions.
And when I want to hear one of my favorite versions, I go
to 9/3/77 . It's just so well played. Jerry's guitar work is jedi material.

I remember taking guitar lessons and brought a tape of this to my guitar teacher. He said that Jerry is just noodling around with major 7th chords. Well, major 7th chords are part of that sound, but noodling? So I asked him to show me what Jerry was doing, especially the seamless blending of single note melodies with chordal progressions. Of course, he had no clue.

On to another guitar teacher... :-)

The 73-74 are the superior versions (in my opinion), but the eighties pulled out some great ones too. One that I really like, not from anu of the aforementioned years, is from the "One From the Vault", American Music Hall, 1975. That has a real "Eyes" and the "Help > Slip > Franks" isn't too shabby either.
